“Tomorrow May Never Come” demonstrates the uncertainty of tomorrow as well as attitudes of imminence and presence. The work draws on the idioms of “Ssematimba ne Kikwabanga” (“Ssematimba and Kikwabanga”), a Kiganda royalist song about two warrior brothers who postponed celebrating a special gift they had received until after their return from a battle. But instead, they died and never had the chance.
